This is beyond idiotic. We actually have two nominees, McCain and Clinton, that say that suspending the gas tax is a good idea. Well hell, if that’s a good idea, here’s a great one; Suspend all taxes! I mean if we can get along without adequate roads, we can CERTAINLY get along without paying the salaries of every single government employee (and those that they hire). Why just think of all the money we will save by not paying these people any longer. Why didn’t we think of this before? And honestly, how often do you dial “911″? Most of us will hardly notice the difference, unless for some crazy reason we might need one of the many things that taxes pay for. The military could switch over to a policy of whatever you take is your salary, similar to policies from the past. Why this plan is foolproof, what could possibly go wrong from suspending the payment of taxes?
We have been using paved roads for far too long now, and with the suspension of the gasoline tax, this will change. And all of those people that bought SUV’s will finally get them dirty, providing of course whatever road they are on doesn’t collapse and kill them before they are able to get off the highway. And people mocked them for buying such cars, well guess who will be laughing then? That’s right, the oil companies. Because an elimination of the gasoline tax is by no means a guarentee that the price for the consumer will drop the exact amount of the tax, as the likely winners in such a disastrous policy would be the distributors of the gasoline.
So why is this moronic idea being touted as a way to save the consumers some money? I’ll give you a hint. Penguins. Wait, wrong puzzle, no, the correct hint is of course the election. And while this idea might appear to be somewhat attractive, especially to residents of states like Connecticut, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin (all of which pay at LEAST 25 cents per gallon in taxes), there is a downside. As shocking as this may sound, these taxes help pay for the very roads people are driving on, and construction and upkeep of these roads is by no means inexpensive. And how would these do-gooders that are proposing the suspension of the gasoline tax make up for the millions that would be lost? Why we would simply take out a loan, and if this isn’t a brilliant way for China to buy the U.S. one piece at a time, I don’t know what is.
To be fair, Mrs. Clinton did say that she would make up the difference by charging the oil companies a windfall tax, but as to how this would EVER get passed the legislative branch is something she never did shed light on. But I would be willing to wager that every legislator that is up for re-election would vote in favor of this idiocy, regardless of the fact that the windfall tax bill had yet to come before them.
So just imagine it, you are able to save a whole $30 to $40 while the tax is suspended, and all you have to do is allow your own government to become even more worthless than they have been in the past. I am sorry to disagree with the politicians, but this suspension is beyond imbecilic, and has entered the realm of stoner reasoning.
