Appeasement

The election is still months away, and already we have entered the twilight zone.  From conservatives saying that negotiating with countries that are in the “Axis of Evil” is akin to appeasing Nazis, to the former myth of Global Warming, the mounds of fertilizer spewing forth from our beloved politicians seems to know no bounds.  The “appeasement” statements are particularly bewildering, as the U.S. is negotiating with North Korea (yes, part of the axis of evil), to talks with Quadafi (or Gaddafi, or whichever way in the world you want to spell it), who agreed to halt Libya’s nuclear weapons programs in return for not being invaded and/or killed.  Not to mention the “friendly” relations with countries like Saudi Arabia, in spite of there record of human rights abuses.  But hey, whats a little abuse when compared to all of that oil, right?

So the attacks by the right seem to be completely at odds with the realities of even the day to day diplomatic operations conducted by the U.S., but we can’t let a little something like fact enter into the debate.  It is well known that we actually pay factions within Iraq to not attack our forces.  Well it’s a good thing the Democrats didn’t start that program, or else they would be attacked for submitting to extortion by the enemies of our own military forces, which is of course what is happening.

There are a great number of things that both sides accuse each other of, but the next one seems to be special.  Global Warming.  McCain now says that Global Warming is a threat to all of us, and shockingly, even President Bush is now in agreement.  After winning his re-election, there really could be no harm in admitting to this.  So all of the people that attacked Al Gore, and seemed to ignore the fact that glaciers were not merely shrinking a little, but melting faster and faster, they are mostly silent now.  And when you realize how they shouted down others that were trying to say that maybe the “warming trend” might be a problem, how scientist’s reports were “edited” to either completely ignore the findings, or simply say that the evidence was not conclusive, this reversal by the conservative party is beyond belief.  From using scientific reports funded by oil corporations, to simply burying their collective heads in the sand, for Republicans to now admit that global warming is a danger without acknowledging their greed and recklessness is reprehensible, if not criminal.

But thankfully, in the midst of all the crises, the oil companies are still managing to make record profits, as the price of gas now has passed $4.00 a gallon in some areas.  If you want to look at someone guilty of appeasement, look no further than the party that seems to be such wonderful friends of the oIl corporations.  President Bush was in Saudi Arabia recently, and asked if they could possibly increase production.  The Saudi’s politely declined (after snickering a bit).  Good thing they’re are friends, right?
